Escondido is located 30 miles north of San Diego on I-15, and 20 miles east/inland of Oceanside on State Highway 78. The nearest major airport is the San Diego International Airport in San Diego. The nearest minor airport is Palomar Airport in Carlsbad. Founded in 1888, it is one of the oldest cities in San Diego County. The city had a population of 143,911 at the 2010 census.The city is known as Eskondiid in DiegueƱo.

Escondido tends to have a typical Mediterranean climate with warm summers and cool wet winters. Owing to its inland proximity it is considerably warmer than coastal cities like San Diego, Carlsbad or Oceanside. Three lakes are located in or near Escondido (Dixon, Wohlford, Hodges), all of which allow boating and fishing.

Palomar Medical Center is a hospital located east of downtown. It is the only designated trauma center in northern San Diego County. A second hospital, Palomar West, is under construction southwest of the interchange between Interstate 15 and State Route 78. It is scheduled to open in 2012.
